Working with male victims
  • Recognise that men are more reluctant to access services - often fearing being stigmatised if they do so.
  • Always listen to what the individual wants - many male victims respond to practical assistance and may only consider seeking emotional support at a much later date.
  • Don't assume that men have the same support needs as women or that gay men have the same support needs as heterosexual men.
  • Keep in mind the support needs of the whole family - including those of children who are living in the family.
  • Contact a specialist service for advice, such as www.mensadviceline.org.uk
  • Download the working with men document for a fuller assessment of working with men.
