In the York and Selby there were over 3,700 reports of domestic violence made to the police in 2010. In Richmond and Hambleton there were over 1200 reports.
In just under half of these cases, the police had been called to the property before because of domestic violence.
In many cases there were children present in the house when the incident occurred.
We believe that domestic abuse is massively under-reported. Conservative estimates suggest that at least 90 % of incidents of domestic abuse go un-reported.
Most incidents of domestic abuse are perpetrated against women by male partners. Female victims are also likely to report a greater number of attacks and suffer greater fear when living with domestic abuse.
However, there are a significant number of male victims of abuse - in both heterosexual and homosexual relationships.
